Not the gar\u00adden. Not the break\u00adfast.<\/p>\n<p>A mem\u00ado\u00adry.<\/p>\n<h2>What remains is not a fact, it\u2019s a feeling<\/h2>\n<p>Almost no one, think\u00ading of a place they can\u2019t for\u00adget, remem\u00adbers the build\u00ading first. They remem\u00adber a sun\u00adset seen from one par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar spot. A con\u00adver\u00adsa\u00adtion that ran longer than expect\u00aded. Light that entered a cer\u00adtain way at a cer\u00adtain hour. A meal that arrived exact\u00adly when it was need\u00aded. A wine that accom\u00adpa\u00adnied a din\u00adner in a way that seemed, for a moment, per\u00adfect. A small sur\u00adprise. The feel\u00ading of being, for a few days, exact\u00adly where they were meant to be.<\/p>\n<p>Those mem\u00ado\u00adries don\u2019t arrive as sep\u00ada\u00adrate facts. They arrive fused into a sin\u00adgle impres\u00adsion, hard to break into parts, hard\u00ader still to explain pre\u00adcise\u00adly to some\u00adone else. Any\u00adone try\u00ading to say why a place mat\u00adtered so much almost always ends up say\u00ading some\u00adthing impre\u00adcise, some\u00adthing like \u201cI don\u2019t quite know what it was, but it felt dif\u00adfer\u00adent.\u201d That impre\u00adci\u00adsion isn\u2019t a flaw in the mem\u00ado\u00adry. It\u2019s its nat\u00adur\u00adal form.<\/p>\n<h2>A memory is not made by a single gesture<\/h2>\n<p>A mem\u00ado\u00adry this vivid does not come from one extra\u00ador\u00addi\u00adnary moment. There\u2019s almost nev\u00ader a sin\u00adgle scene that explains every\u00adthing. Instead, there\u2019s a suc\u00adces\u00adsion of small\u00ader instants: a ges\u00adture, a wait that nev\u00ader felt like wait\u00ading, an answer that arrived at exact\u00adly the right time, a pause no one inter\u00adrupt\u00aded. None of those instants, seen on its own, seems like enough to explain any\u00adthing. Seen togeth\u00ader, they leave a mark that no sin\u00adgle moment could have left alone.<\/p>\n<p>When all of that hap\u00adpens at once, with no part demand\u00ading atten\u00adtion for itself, some\u00adthing becomes mem\u00ado\u00adrable. Not because that effect was pur\u00adsued direct\u00adly, but because it\u2019s sim\u00adply what hap\u00adpens nat\u00adu\u00adral\u00adly when every\u00adthing works togeth\u00ader. A last\u00ading mem\u00ado\u00adry can\u00adnot be pur\u00adsued direct\u00adly. None of this guar\u00adan\u00adtees that it will hap\u00adpen. It only cre\u00adates the con\u00addi\u00adtions for it to.<\/p>\n<h2>The work doesn\u2019t end at check-out<\/h2>\n<p>There\u2019s an idea that hos\u00adpi\u00adtal\u00adi\u00adty ends when the guest leaves. It does\u00adn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>The true work of hos\u00adpi\u00adtal\u00adi\u00adty does\u00adn\u2019t end at the good\u00adbye. It con\u00adtin\u00adues, trans\u00adformed, in the mem\u00ado\u00adry of the per\u00adson who left. It remains there, ready to be awak\u00adened by a sim\u00adi\u00adlar scent, a sim\u00adi\u00adlar light, or a wine that, for an instant, brings back some\u00adthing that seemed for\u00adgot\u00adten. That per\u00adson may nev\u00ader return to the phys\u00adi\u00adcal place, and yet the place keeps hap\u00adpen\u00ading inside them, every time that mem\u00ado\u00adry sur\u00adfaces.<\/p>\n<p>That means a well cared-for place does\u00adn\u2019t end at its geo\u00adgraph\u00adic lim\u00adits. It extends, invis\u00adi\u00adbly, into every\u00adone who took some\u00adthing from it. That is its real ter\u00adri\u00adto\u00adry, and it\u2019s far larg\u00ader than any prop\u00ader\u00adty.<\/p>\n<p>A place does\u00adn\u2019t, in the end, build a per\u00adfect expe\u00adri\u00adence.
