A sin\u00adgle note, no mat\u00adter how per\u00adfect\u00adly tuned, is not music.<\/p>\n

Music begins when sev\u00ader\u00adal dif\u00adfer\u00adent notes sound togeth\u00ader and, instead of can\u00adcelling each oth\u00ader out, sup\u00adport each oth\u00ader. That\u2019s a chord. No note stops being what it is. None dis\u00adguis\u00ades itself as anoth\u00ader. But togeth\u00ader they pro\u00adduce some\u00adthing none of them could pro\u00adduce alone.<\/p>\n

That is har\u00admo\u00adny. And it\u2019s dif\u00adfer\u00adent from bal\u00adance, even though the two tend to get con\u00adfused.<\/p>\n

Two different logics<\/h2>\n

\u201cBal\u00adance keeps some\u00adthing from dom\u00adi\u00adnat\u00ading. No ele\u00adment is allowed to take over the oth\u00aders: the alco\u00adhol must\u00adn\u2019t cov\u00ader the fruit, the design must\u00adn\u2019t cov\u00ader the warmth, one detail must\u00adn\u2019t out\u00adshine anoth\u00ader. It\u2019s the log\u00adic of a scale \u2014 keep\u00ading things in pro\u00adpor\u00adtion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Har\u00admo\u00adny is some\u00adthing else. It isn\u2019t about keep\u00ading things in pro\u00adpor\u00adtion, but about dif\u00adfer\u00adent things \u2014 not oppo\u00adsites, sim\u00adply dif\u00adfer\u00adent \u2014 coex\u00adist\u00ading with\u00adout need\u00ading to resem\u00adble each oth\u00ader.<\/p>\n

The house and the vine\u00adyard aren\u2019t com\u00adpet\u00ading. A gar\u00adden and a liv\u00ading room aren\u2019t com\u00adpet\u00ading. A con\u00adver\u00adsa\u00adtion with a guest and the silence of an after\u00adnoon aren\u2019t com\u00adpet\u00ading either. They\u2019re dif\u00adfer\u00adent voic\u00ades. Har\u00admo\u00adny is being able to hear them at the same moment, or over the same after\u00adnoon, with\u00adout either hav\u00ading to go qui\u00adet for the oth\u00ader to be heard.<\/p>\n

When harmony is missing<\/h2>\n

You notice right away when some\u00adthing lacks har\u00admo\u00adny, even if every part of it is well exe\u00adcut\u00aded.<\/p>\n

A flaw\u00adless room in a place with no soul. A tech\u00adni\u00adcal\u00adly per\u00adfect wine that says noth\u00ading. Impec\u00adca\u00adble ser\u00advice, deliv\u00adered by some\u00adone who would clear\u00adly rather be some\u00adwhere else. In none of these cas\u00ades does one ele\u00adment dom\u00adi\u00adnate anoth\u00ader. The prob\u00adlem isn\u2019t that some\u00adthing stands out \u2014 it\u2019s that the parts aren\u2019t speak\u00ading to each oth\u00ader. They\u2019re sim\u00adply sit\u00adting side by side.<\/p>\n

Har\u00admo\u00adny isn\u2019t achieved by adding up cor\u00adrect parts. It\u2019s achieved when those parts start respond\u00ading to one anoth\u00ader.<\/p>\n

A house with several voices<\/h2>\n

Any project that brings togeth\u00ader dif\u00adfer\u00adent things \u2014 wine and hos\u00adpi\u00adtal\u00adi\u00adty, a har\u00advest and a guest sea\u00adson, work in the fields and a con\u00adver\u00adsa\u00adtion at the table \u2014 runs the risk of each one pulling in its own direc\u00adtion. Of the wine say\u00ading one thing and the hos\u00adpi\u00adtal\u00adi\u00adty say\u00ading anoth\u00ader. Of each activ\u00adi\u00adty work\u00ading well on its own, with\u00adout the whole ever find\u00ading a rec\u00adog\u00adniz\u00adable voice.<\/p>\n

Har\u00admo\u00adny is what keeps that from hap\u00adpen\u00ading. Not because every\u00adthing looks alike, but because every\u00adthing answers to the same way of look\u00ading at things. The same care that goes into a clus\u00adter of grapes goes into a room. The same respect a wine demands for its own time is giv\u00aden to a guest\u2019s time.<\/p>\n

Voic\u00ades don\u2019t need to be the same. They need to be in tune with each oth\u00ader.<\/p>\n
