Alco\u00adhol con\u00adtent. Total acid\u00adi\u00adty. pH. Months in bar\u00adrel. All of that appears on a tech\u00adni\u00adcal sheet, and all of it is true. But no one remem\u00adbers a wine for its num\u00adbers.<\/p>\n
The same is true of a hotel.<\/p>\n
Square metres. Num\u00adber of rooms. Ameni\u00adties. A rat\u00ading on a book\u00ading plat\u00adform. All of that is true as well, and just as insuf\u00adfi\u00adcient. It describes the place, but it does\u00adn\u2019t explain why some\u00adone remem\u00adbers it years lat\u00ader.<\/p>\n
What we remem\u00adber is pre\u00adcise\u00adly what no tech\u00adni\u00adcal sheet can cap\u00adture. Tech\u00adni\u00adcal sheets describe a prod\u00aduct. Mem\u00ado\u00adry describes an expe\u00adri\u00adence.<\/p>\n
A room can be pho\u00adtographed. The warmth with which some\u00adone wel\u00adcomes you can\u00adnot.<\/p>\n
A gar\u00adden can be pho\u00adtographed. The exact moment you decide a place mat\u00adters to you can\u00adnot.<\/p>\n
A break\u00adfast can be pho\u00adtographed. The feel\u00ading that no one is rush\u00ading you to fin\u00adish it can\u00adnot.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s an intan\u00adgi\u00adble: some\u00adthing real, some\u00adthing felt with com\u00adplete clar\u00adi\u00adty, that resists becom\u00ading data. Not because it\u2019s vague or impre\u00adcise. On the con\u00adtrary \u2014 it\u2019s often the most pre\u00adcise thing there is. It can be pre\u00adcise with\u00adout being mea\u00adsur\u00adable.<\/p>\n
We feel more com\u00adfort\u00adable mea\u00adsur\u00ading what we can count.<\/p>\n
Rooms. Square metres. Points. Stars. Months in bar\u00adrel.<\/p>\n
It makes sense. Num\u00adbers help us com\u00adpare, choose, and jus\u00adti\u00adfy a deci\u00adsion before we make it.<\/p>\n
But they rarely explain what actu\u00adal\u00adly stays in our mem\u00ado\u00adry.<\/p>\n
Mem\u00ado\u00adry does\u00adn\u2019t remem\u00adber a sum of facts. It remem\u00adbers a feel\u00ading.<\/p>\n
No one remem\u00adbers a list of ser\u00advices. We remem\u00adber how we felt in a place.<\/p>\n
The curi\u00adous thing is that this feel\u00ading almost nev\u00ader comes from a sin\u00adgle grand ges\u00adture. It\u2019s built from hun\u00addreds of small things that, tak\u00aden one by one, seem insignif\u00adi\u00adcant.<\/p>\n
Work\u00ading with intan\u00adgi\u00adbles means accept\u00ading that much of the most impor\u00adtant thing we do can\u2019t be mea\u00adsured, shown, or put on a list of ser\u00advices.<\/p>\n
It means tak\u00ading care of a con\u00adver\u00adsa\u00adtion that lasts three min\u00adutes and is record\u00aded nowhere. Tak\u00ading care of the silence before some\u00adone asks if they need any\u00adthing. Mak\u00ading sure a wine does\u00adn\u2019t shout what it is, but qui\u00adet\u00adly sug\u00adgests it.<\/p>\n
Those are rarely the things peo\u00adple men\u00adtion in a review. And yet they are prob\u00ada\u00adbly what makes some\u00adone, months lat\u00ader, remem\u00adber a place with\u00adout quite being able to explain why.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s why, over the years, we stopped try\u00ading to show every\u00adthing we do. Some things can only be expe\u00adri\u00adenced. There\u2019s no point try\u00ading to explain them before\u00adhand.<\/p>\n
