I don\u2019t know if there were few\u00ader of them before. Per\u00adhaps we removed them when we worked the soil. Per\u00adhaps they were there and I sim\u00adply did\u00adn\u2019t see them. I grew up among vine\u00adyards and plants, but I have no mem\u00ado\u00adry of net\u00adtles from when I was a child.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It makes me think about how much the way we look at things changes over the years.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The land\u00adscape may be the same, <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>and yet we are no longer the same.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/h2>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Learning to read the land<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-551 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.fincaadalgisa.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/08\/cosecha_ortigas_blog-225x300.jpg\" alt width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.fincaadalgisa.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/08\/cosecha_ortigas_blog-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blog.fincaadalgisa.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/08\/cosecha_ortigas_blog-767x1024.jpg 767w, https:\/\/blog.fincaadalgisa.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/08\/cosecha_ortigas_blog-768x1026.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.fincaadalgisa.com\/english\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/08\/cosecha_ortigas_blog.jpg 1085w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\">Since we began work\u00ading with agroe\u00adco\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal prac\u00adtices, the soil has changed, and so has the way I observe it.<\/p>\n<p>We stopped assum\u00ading that every\u00adthing grow\u00ading spon\u00adta\u00adneous\u00adly need\u00aded to be removed. Instead, we began ask\u00ading why one plant appears here and anoth\u00ader there, and what they might be telling us about the soil.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when I start\u00aded notic\u00ading the net\u00adtles.<\/p>\n<p>Now they grow every\u00adwhere. We also have mal\u00adlows, plan\u00adtain, dan\u00adde\u00adlions and many oth\u00ader plants I prob\u00ada\u00adbly would once have sim\u00adply called \u201cweeds\u201d. Today, I know they can give us clues about what is hap\u00adpen\u00ading in the soil.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>From nettles to soup<\/h2>\n<p>The first time I real\u00adly got close to a net\u00adtle was in the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Look\u00ading for some\u00adthing to do with them, I found this recipe for net\u00adtle, pota\u00adto and leek soup on<a href=\"https:\/\/adamantkitchen.com\/potato-leek-and-nettle-soup\/\"> Adamant Kitchen<\/a>. I liked the idea, so we decid\u00aded to try it.<\/p>\n<p>We gath\u00adered the net\u00adtles and, with the help of my moth\u00ader \u2014 because she is the one who real\u00adly knows how to cook \u2014 we made the soup. It was green and intense, a lit\u00adtle like spinach with char\u00adac\u00adter.<\/p>\n<p>And I loved it.<\/p>\n<h2>From the table to the garden<\/h2>\n<p>Then I dis\u00adcov\u00adered that I could use those same net\u00adtles to make <strong>net\u00adtle tea<\/strong> for the plants. We made our first batch last year and began try\u00ading it in the gar\u00adden. Today, we use it reg\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly, always at night. And we observe.<\/p>\n<p>The gar\u00adden is green\u00ader, full of flow\u00aders, insects and but\u00adter\u00adflies. Guests at Fin\u00adca Adal\u00adgisa notice it too and often tell us they have nev\u00ader seen the gar\u00adden look\u00ading so alive. There is a whole world grow\u00ading spon\u00adta\u00adneous\u00adly around us, and it is worth stop\u00adping to look at it.<\/p>\n<p>Net\u00adtles became one small part of that learn\u00ading. First, I dis\u00adcov\u00adered I could eat them. Then I learned that I could trans\u00adform them and return them to the soil to nour\u00adish oth\u00ader plants.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know whether there are many more net\u00adtles today than there used to be, or whether I have sim\u00adply learned to see them.<\/p>\n<p>Prob\u00ada\u00adbly both.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The land changed.<br>\nAnd so did I.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Per\u00adhaps grow\u00ading old\u00ader has some\u00adthing to do with that: look\u00ading again at what has been in front of us for years and dis\u00adcov\u00ader\u00ading how much we still have to learn.<\/p>\n<p><em>August.
