No one says, \u201cWhat won\u00adder\u00adful bal\u00adance this wine has.\u201d Instead, we imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly notice when the alco\u00adhol stands out, when the oak over\u00adwhelms the fruit, or when the acid\u00adi\u00adty dis\u00adrupts the whole.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" data-sourcepos=\"10:1-10:87;345-431\">Bal\u00adance does not call atten\u00adtion to itself. It becomes vis\u00adi\u00adble only when it dis\u00adap\u00adpears.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" data-sourcepos=\"12:1-12:33;433-465\">The same is true of hos\u00adpi\u00adtal\u00adi\u00adty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" data-sourcepos=\"14:1-14:142;467-608\">In a hotel, the room mat\u00adters. Almost no one writes a review about them. And yet, when one of them fails, the entire expe\u00adri\u00adence los\u00ades its bal\u00adance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" data-sourcepos=\"36:1-36:26;1210-1235\">The same is true of wine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" data-sourcepos=\"38:1-38:215;1237-1451\">We do not remem\u00adber a great wine because its acid\u00adi\u00adty was per\u00adfect or its tan\u00adnins were beau\u00adti\u00adful\u00adly inte\u00adgrat\u00aded. We remem\u00adber it because noth\u00ading stood out more than it should. Every\u00adthing sim\u00adply seemed to be in its place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" data-sourcepos=\"40:1-40:187;1453-1639\">Per\u00adhaps that is why this idea feels so famil\u00adiar to us. For more than twen\u00adty years, we have been try\u00ading to find the same bal\u00adance in two dif\u00adfer\u00adent crafts: mak\u00ading wine and wel\u00adcom\u00ading peo\u00adple.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" data-sourcepos=\"42:1-42:44;1641-1684\">That may be the best def\u00adi\u00adn\u00adi\u00adtion of bal\u00adance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" data-sourcepos=\"44:1-44:28;1686-1713\">It is not one more ele\u00adment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" data-sourcepos=\"46:1-46:104;1715-1818\">It is the moment when all the ele\u00adments stop com\u00adpet\u00ading with one anoth\u00ader and begin to sup\u00adport each oth\u00ader.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" data-sourcepos=\"48:1-48:134;1820-1953\">Hotels tend to talk about rooms, swim\u00adming pools, restau\u00adrants and square metres. Wines talk about scores, grape vari\u00adeties and bar\u00adrels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" data-sourcepos=\"50:1-50:89;1955-2043\">Over the years, we have learned to pay atten\u00adtion to pre\u00adcise\u00adly what is almost nev\u00ader seen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" data-sourcepos=\"52:1-52:187;2045-2231\">Because we believe that true hospitality\u2014like a great wine\u2014is not cre\u00adat\u00aded by adding extra\u00ador\u00addi\u00adnary things, but by allow\u00ading hun\u00addreds of small details to work togeth\u00ader until they dis\u00adap\u00adpear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" data-sourcepos=\"54:1-54:49;2233-2281\">And when that hap\u00adpens, only one feel\u00ading remains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\" data-sourcepos=\"56:1-56:9;2283-2291\">Har\u00admo\u00adny.<\/p>\n<p><em>Series: The Phi\u00adlos\u00ado\u00adphy of a Place<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are things we notice only when they are miss\u00ading.
