These <strong>don\u00adkeys in Men\u00addoza<\/strong> changed the way I see patience, trust and the nat\u00adur\u00adal world.<\/p>\n<h2>What Donkeys in Mendoza taught me<\/h2>\n<p>Long before I had my own don\u00adkeys in Men\u00addoza, I would stop to look at them. Because the truth is, don\u00adkeys have always appeared in my life. Long before I had any of my own. Wher\u00adev\u00ader I spot\u00adted one, I took a pho\u00adto \u2014 on trips, in for\u00adgot\u00adten vil\u00adlages, on the side of a road. There was some\u00adthing about them that made me stop. He grew up sur\u00adround\u00aded by peo\u00adple, by warmth and by trust. He nev\u00ader real\u00adly learned fear. For years, every time I raised my hand to stroke her, she would move her head \u2014 just bare\u00adly \u2014 back. A min\u00adi\u00admal ges\u00adture. Almost invis\u00adi\u00adble. Son of Dar\u00adwin and Ros\u00adal\u00eda, but raised among don\u00adkeys from day one.<\/p>\n<p>And that changes every\u00adthing.<\/p>\n<p>Ram\u00f3n nat\u00adu\u00adral\u00adly under\u00adstands their rhythms, their silences and their codes. There are things no one taught him \u2014 he sim\u00adply knows them.<\/p>\n<p>Some\u00adtimes I feel that Ram\u00f3n end\u00aded up teach\u00ading some\u00adthing to both of them.<\/p>\n<p>To Dar\u00adwin, how to be more of a don\u00adkey.<\/p>\n<p>And to Ros\u00adal\u00eda, how to trust a lit\u00adtle more.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Living with donkeys in Mendoza<\/h2>\n<p>Liv\u00ading along\u00adside them helped me under\u00adstand some\u00adthing very sim\u00adple: don\u00adkeys observe first. Then they decide.<\/p>\n<p>They don\u2019t react impul\u00adsive\u00adly the way hors\u00ades do. They don\u2019t con\u00adstant\u00adly seek approval the way dogs do. And they don\u2019t move sim\u00adply because some\u00adone push\u00ades them. When some\u00adthing doesn\u2019t feel safe to them, they sim\u00adply don\u2019t move for\u00adward.<\/p>\n<p>That dri\u00adves a lot of peo\u00adple crazy.<\/p>\n<p>But there is also enor\u00admous wis\u00addom in it.<\/p>\n<p>I proved it to myself in the sim\u00adplest way:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If I chase them, they run.<br>\nIf I walk calm\u00adly, they come back.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It seems obvi\u00adous.<\/p>\n<p>And yet we almost always do the oppo\u00adsite \u2014 we rush what we want, and end up push\u00ading it away.<\/p>\n<p>Dar\u00adwin, Ros\u00adal\u00eda and Ram\u00f3n live in La Con\u00adsul\u00adta, Valle de Uco, on the same land where<a href=\"http:\/\/www.altamiralodge.com\"> Altami\u00adra Lodge<\/a> is tak\u00ading shape: a small refuge sur\u00adround\u00aded by moun\u00adtains, vine\u00adyards, silence and nature.<\/p>\n<p>A place where don\u00adkeys still belong to the land\u00adscape of Men\u00addoza.<\/p>\n<p>These three don\u00adkeys in Men\u00addoza remind me every day that life does not always need to move faster.
