Before dis\u00adcussing wine tours, it\u2019s help\u00adful to under\u00adstand&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">the map<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">&nbsp;: the land\u00adscapes, dis\u00adtances, and his\u00adto\u00adry explain the expe\u00adri\u00adence much bet\u00adter than any list of winer\u00adies. Sim\u00adply put, Men\u00addoza is orga\u00adnized around&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">its rivers and val\u00adleys<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">&nbsp;, which give rise to areas with very dis\u00adtinct iden\u00adti\u00adties.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><strong><span dir=\"auto\">North of the Mendoza River<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong><span dir=\"auto\">His\u00adtoric and near\u00adby Men\u00addoza<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">North of the Men\u00addoza Riv\u00ader are the areas clos\u00adest to the city and our estate.<\/span><br>\n<span dir=\"auto\">Mod\u00adern Men\u00addoza wine\u00admak\u00ading took root here, pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly from the late 19th and ear\u00adly 20th cen\u00adturies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Maip\u00fa<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong><span dir=\"auto\">The ori\u00adgin: trains, winer\u00adies and mod\u00adern wine\u00admak\u00ading<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Maip\u00fa is one of Men\u00addoza\u00ad\u2019s old\u00adest wine-pro\u00adduc\u00ading regions with\u00adin the mod\u00adern devel\u00adop\u00adment of the indus\u00adtry. Many of the first winer\u00adies were estab\u00adlished here for a very spe\u00adcif\u00adic rea\u00adson: its&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">prox\u00adim\u00adi\u00adty to the rail\u00adway, which<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">&nbsp;allowed wine to be shipped to Buenos Aires. As a<\/span><br>\n<span dir=\"auto\">result , Maip\u00fa boasts his\u00adtoric winer\u00adies, tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal build\u00adings, and an iden\u00adti\u00adty deeply con\u00adnect\u00aded to the ori\u00adgins of the wine indus\u00adtry. Today, it is a more urban\u00adized area, inte\u00adgrat\u00aded into the city\u2019s growth. The Andes Moun\u00adtains are per\u00adceived quite uni\u00adform\u00adly through\u00adout the region: it is not a region defined by land\u00adscape, but rather by&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">his\u00adto\u00adry, archi\u00adtec\u00adture, and urban struc\u00adture&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Luj\u00e1n de Cuyo<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong><span dir=\"auto\">The nat\u00adur\u00adal shift of viti\u00adcul\u00adture.<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">As time passed and the city grew, wine\u00admak\u00ading began to&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">shift from Maip\u00fa towards Luj\u00e1n de Cuyo<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">&nbsp;. First it fol\u00adlowed the&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">main roads<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">&nbsp;, and then it sought areas with more space, bet\u00adter views and new devel\u00adop\u00adment pos\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adties.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><em><strong><span dir=\"auto\">The old Route 40<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">In Luj\u00e1n, the&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">old Route 40&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">rep\u00adre\u00adsents an inter\u00adme\u00addi\u00adate stage of this shift. The land\u00adscape here is char\u00adac\u00adter\u00adized by tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal urban\u00adiza\u00adtion, old hous\u00ades, and large groves&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">of trees that form ver\u00adi\u00adta\u00adble tun\u00adnels,<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">&nbsp;a very Men\u00addoza-like fea\u00adture. Winer\u00adies and vine\u00adyards blend into this urban-wood\u00aded envi\u00adron\u00adment. The Andes are ever-present, though often per\u00adceived&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">through<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">&nbsp;trees, gar\u00addens, and build\u00adings, more as a con\u00adstant pres\u00adence than an open vista.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><em><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Vistalba and Las Compuertas<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Fur\u00adther west, with\u00adin Luj\u00e1n de Cuyo, lie&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Vistal\u00adba and Las Com\u00adpuer\u00adtas.&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">These areas mark a new stage in devel\u00adop\u00adment: more vine\u00adyards, less urban den\u00adsi\u00adty, more space, and a&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">clear\u00ader appre\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion of the land\u00adscape and the moun\u00adtains.&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">Here more con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adrary winer\u00adies begin to appear, though still in keep\u00ading with Luj\u00e1n\u2019s tra\u00addi\u00adtion\u00adal scale.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><em><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Perdriel and Agrelo<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Final\u00adly, still with\u00adin Luj\u00e1n de Cuyo, in&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Per\u00addriel and Agre\u00adlo,<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">&nbsp;the land\u00adscape opens up dra\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly. Here, expan\u00adsive vine\u00adyards, mod\u00adern winer\u00adies, and a direct, open, and impos\u00ading&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">view<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">&nbsp;. In its north\u00adern part, north of the Tunuy\u00e1n Riv\u00ader, areas like Tupun\u00adga\u00adto and Tunuy\u00e1n have devel\u00adoped rapid\u00adly since the 2000s. Here, mod\u00adern winer\u00adies, expres\u00adsive con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adrary archi\u00adtec\u00adture, and a more rur\u00adal, less urban envi\u00adron\u00adment pre\u00addom\u00adi\u00adnate. In the Uco Val\u00adley, one feels&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">clos\u00ader<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">&nbsp;to the Andes Moun\u00adtains, more immersed in the Andean land\u00adscape, rather than admir\u00ading it from afar.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span dir=\"auto\">South of the Tunuy\u00e1n River<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span dir=\"auto\">La Con\u00adsul\u00adta, Para\u00adje Altami\u00adra and El Cepil\u00adlo<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">La Con\u00adsul\u00adta, Para\u00adje Altami\u00adra, and El Cepil\u00adlo belong to the depart\u00adment of San Car\u00adlos, south of the Tunuy\u00e1n Riv\u00ader, with\u00adin the Uco Val\u00adley. Not all of San Car\u00adlos is wine-pro\u00adduc\u00ading, but&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">these areas are<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">&nbsp;, and they also have a rich agri\u00adcul\u00adtur\u00adal his\u00adto\u00adry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">In&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">La Con\u00adsul\u00adta and&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Para\u00adje<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">&nbsp;Altami\u00adra, there are&nbsp;vine\u00adyards<\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">&nbsp;over 100 years old,&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">plant\u00aded over sev\u00ader\u00adal gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtions. Many estates\u2014including my family\u2019s\u2014were plant\u00aded in the 1940s, on land with a pri\u00ador wine\u00admak\u00ading tra\u00addi\u00adtion. For me, La&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Con\u00adsul\u00adta and Para\u00adje Altami\u00adra are the<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">&nbsp;most emo\u00adtion\u00adal part of the Uco Val\u00adley: more small-town life, less mass tourism, and a dai\u00adly con\u00adnec\u00adtion between wine and peo\u00adple.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Fur\u00adther south appears&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">El Cepil\u00adlo,<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">&nbsp;the&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">south\u00adern\u00admost<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">&nbsp;of the Uco Val\u00adley, espe\u00adcial\u00adly inter\u00adest\u00ading for cold cli\u00admate vari\u00adeties, par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">Pinot<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">&nbsp;Noir .<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">There are few\u00ader winer\u00adies, but a very dis\u00adtinct char\u00adac\u00adter. This is the Uco Val\u00adley at its south\u00adern edge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"auto\">And fur\u00adther south?<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">&nbsp;San Rafael is part of the Men\u00addoza wine map, but due to its dis\u00adtance it is not prac\u00adti\u00adcal to vis\u00adit it from the city of Men\u00addoza or from our hotel on a day trip.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span dir=\"auto\">So\u2026 how do you choose a wine tour?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">It\u2019s not about \u201cwhich win\u00adery has the best wine.\u201d<\/span><br>\n<span dir=\"auto\">Today, Men\u00addoza has&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">excel\u00adlent wine in all its regions<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">&nbsp;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">The key is to choose accord\u00ading to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span dir=\"auto\">the avail\u00adable time,<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span dir=\"auto\">the dis\u00adtances,<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span dir=\"auto\">the land\u00adscape that attracts you most,<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span dir=\"auto\">an inter\u00adest in his\u00adto\u00adry or mod\u00adern archi\u00adtec\u00adture,<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span dir=\"auto\">and the pace at which you want to trav\u00adel.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span dir=\"auto\">Before choos\u00ading winer\u00adies, under\u00adstand\u00ading&nbsp;<\/span><strong><span dir=\"auto\">the dif\u00adfer\u00adent regions<\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"auto\">&nbsp;is the first step to enjoy\u00ading Men\u00addoza mean\u00ading\u00adful\u00adly.
